Canyoning in Jordan

Typically what separates a canyon from any ordinary stream is the narrow passage created by erosion into bedrock, creating beautiful sculptured walls and spectacular waterfalls.

The definition of canyoning (also known as canyoneering) according to wikipedia is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling, and/or swimming. It requires skills in navigation, ropework, climbing, avoiding hypothermia etc.

This sport is popular in several countries but rather new in Jordan although the Jordan Dead Sea Rift is a magnificent territory for it, Hundreds of steep canyons lead down to the Dead Sea from the central plateau, and many of them contain hot springs.

Don't be deceived by the arid desert areas surrounding the canyons they contain beautiful streams fed all the year round from the underground springs, and lush vegetation that can be seen among the mazes of rocks.

Because of the variation in canyon types and difficulties this sport can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels even children. But Canyoning can be treacherous so one must be careful walking down uneven, slippery surfaces and abseiling in wet, cold conditions.
