Lying 320 km southwest of Amman, 120 km south of Pe tra,
and only 68 km north of Aqaba lays Wadi Rum. It offers a
truly unique
and adventurous experience and is said to be like a trip
to another world! The visitors will be amazed by the
vast, silent, timeless and starkly beautiful place with
its surroundings amid the
stupendous cliffs, canyons, and seemingly endless orange
sands as they enter the desert on a camel, horse, or 4x4
jeep driven by a local Bedouin. It is then up to them to
explore and discover the secrets of Wadi Rum hiking
through its sheer granite and sandstone cliffs and
mountains. Many have described these routes as
comparable to those found in the Dolomites.
Wadi Rum is probably
best known because of its connection with the enigmatic
British officer T.E. Lawrence, who was based here during
the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18, and as the setting for
the film that carried his name "Lawrence of Arabia".
Moreover,
Jabal
Rum is the highest peak in the
area and the 2nd highest in Jordan. Others are some 27
km north of the Rum village like Jabal Kharaz and Jabal
Burdah with its Rock Bridge which is one of Wadi Rum's
most popular attractions.
Last but not least, Wadi Rum remains the h ost
of several humble Bedouin tribes who are hospitable and
friendly. When visited, they will offer their visitors
mint tea or cardamom coffee in
their black tents and invite them to join them by
sitting by the fire under the sky. It will be an
unforgettable experience. |
